The DCLA School Board has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2024 football season due to a significant drop in player participation. Although 13 students participated in spring practice, unforeseen circumstances have caused that number to fall by the beginning of the school year, making it impossible to field a team safely and competitively. The Board explored all available options to ensure our students could continue participating in football this season. One potential solution was to form a cooperative (co-op) team with a neighboring district. Unfortunately, due to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) rule stating that once classifications have been established for the next two-year cycle in football, only co-ops whose combined Average Daily Memberships (ADMs) do not place them into a higher classification will be approved, this was not possible. After thorough research and discussions with nearby districts, it was determined that a co-op would result in each of the districts moving to a higher classification, thus making the option unfeasible. The decision to cancel the season was not made lightly. The safety and well-being of our student-athletes is our top priority. With fewer than the necessary players, the risk of injury and the inability to have a fully functioning team made it clear that moving forward with the season was not in the best interest of our students. We understand the disappointment this may cause our athletes, their families, and our community. The DCLA School Board and administration are committed to ensuring that our athletes remain engaged and active in other ways during the fall season. We thank our community for their understanding and continued support as we navigate this challenging situation.
